Paul,

There is no question that Intel is way ahead of the x86 competition when it comes to high end computing. Until recently, the fastest supercomputers in the world used Pentium Pro processors. However, I don't see PII/Pentium Pro based MP systems ever making it to the mainstream desktop. This will have to wait for IA64 which offers a much cleaner MP architecture.

In other words, the next couple of years are going to be very rough on Intel.
