EP was COO before he replaced Canion as CEO. Canion was forced to resign either in 1991 or 1992 after the recession and price competition blew cpq's sales to smithereens. EP responded by cutting prices and profit margins and the battle for market share raged on until 1994, when cpq surpassed ibm as top pc seller. I'm not sure if EP became ceo in 1991 or 1992.
