I saw The Van, Intimate Relations, The House of Yes, Touch and Unhook the Stars this weekend. I stayed up a bit too late every night to do this, but Touch(3 1/2 stars from me) and Unhook the Stars (3 stars) were worth it. I thought Intimate Relations was interesting, but I had thought it was a comedy- which it wasn't, except in the very blackest sense. The Van was nowhere near as good as The Commitments and The Snapper- by the same author. It was OK though. The House of Yes was just odd. Can't recommend it even though Parker Posey is always great as was Bujold (an actress I really think is overlooked) and Tori Spelling was darn good too. The story, however, sucked. It had no point, was not very interesting- as it was SOOOOO obvious what had happened and what was going to happen. Unhook the Stars was very nice. I hated Marisa Tomei's character- but I assume I was supposed to. Gena Rowlands was marvelous, and the story was good. Touch was the best of the bunch and it reminded me quite a lot of Mr North (based on the book Theophilus North by Thorton Wilder.) It was uplifting- in the sense that the "good" people in the movie ended up alive AND happy.
