Yes, that's my understanding too, just the way you said it.
It helps. However, many small software companies just can't
afford the resources to support Alpha versions, not to mention
individuals writing shareware and freeware. I wouldn't
do it myself -- just too risky (riscy?) and customer base
not big enough to justify it.

Wasn't Java supposed to fix this? <G> I let out the breath
I was holding for that some time ago.

My brother, who installed WIn NT on an Alpha machine last week said it was blazingly fast and ran INtel binaries right out of the box... they are not recompiled, however, but run in emulation mode.... AND they are still blazingly fast!
