Weby, I Said The Article Was Balanced, Not Necessarily Right...

I'm still thinking about it. I think it gets "prose" right
for what the search-engine world is up and the current spate
of me-too-ism. I mean, couldn't the same thing have been
said of CBS, NBC, and ABC in their formative years--hell,
even in their middle years...? But, what I don't think the
article captures is the POETRY of the search-engine sector...
the "style" and "personality" that will characterize each
of these engines and media-companies-to-be. For example,
SEEK, because of its superior searching technology--a point
that still remains, though, of course, is a FLOATING point--
could position itself as a more SERIOUS searching tool, for
more serious kinds of searchers, or for business users for
that matter. Again, that's NOT what's happening RIGHT NOW
because we are in a push-me, pull-you kind of game... a furious
scrambling for position... by grabbing eyeballs here and
coming up with copycat functions there.

As for your idea about chat rooms mirroring towns, HELL
YES! The chat room per se is just a vehicle... a very flexible
vehicle... that can be used in thousands of ways. I think
the concern that advertisers haven't gotten full value from
advertising in such areas is A BIT OVERSTATED and under-imagined.
I'll tell you those banners for VISITORS at SI, whether they're
getting massive amounts of clickthroughs or not, are one example
of very CLEVER CREATIVE, perfectly fit to the CONTEXT of SI.
I think branding really works in such environments where folks
congregate and linger. I also can see wonderful VERTICAL
MARKET advertising/promotion/event opportunities springing from new chat
rooms... just like SEEK has done with their channels and
searches.

Anyway, I don't have the answer. But, the Wired article
was at least closer to the truth than the Barron's thing by
a LONG SHOT. And it didn't hint at some sort of scamming.

And, Weby, it is SOOOOOO good to have you among us. I was
going to stay quiet this week UNTIL CERTAIN MATTERS got cleared
up here, but, you asked me a question. And, friend, it was
such a good question... as usual. I look forward to many
posts from you...

Best Regards,
