>>Re: Sun backing out from Merced (source: Barron's, Dvorack)<<

Perhaps it might help to put in perspective Sun's backing of Merced in the first place. Sun never endorsed Merced as the core processor platform for the company; instead, Sun had a deal by which they could gain early access to Merced information -- primarily so their SunSoft operating system group could support the microprocessor. For years now, SunSoft has supported two core microprocessor families: SPARC and Intel. So the Sun Merced agreement announced a while back was really nothing unusual.

Despite all of the promotional hype when the Sun/Merced stuff was announced -- it never signaled a change in Sun's intent concerning the SPARC platform.

In terms of Sun backing out of this deal -- I doubt it. Sun lured NCR over to Solaris by reportedly saying that SunSoft was going to do a better and faster job of supporting Intel microprocessors with Solaris. Merced could be a horrible piece of crap -- and that wouldn't change Sun's original intentions.

Lanac - Re :"INTC must do somthing drastic about the sub1000 market and it cant do anything"

Intel is making money in the sub $1000 PC market - the most significant FACT that is overlooked by EVERY MEDIA ANALYST! Their competitors, AMD & Cyrix, get the good publicity, but the fact that they both have LOST MONEY FOR 3 STRAIGHT QUARTERS is IGNORED.

In addition, Intel OWNS the x86 Server and Workstation market 100%.

And they are making more than GOOD PROFITS there.
