Here's some good news with regards to hardware sales:

April 17, 1998

Market research firm Dataquest recently reported 1997 application-
specific integrated circuit (ASIC) market share rankings. The results
reflect IBM Microelectronics Division's strategic focus on supplying
customers with leading-edge custom logic chip solutions.

IBM moved from the No. 5 position in 1996 into the No. 2 position in
the 1997 worldwide ASIC ranking. IBM's outstanding 53.6 percent
growth in total ASIC sales was the highest of the top 10 worldwide
ASIC suppliers. Next in line was Lucent Technologies with 40.2
percent growth in total ASIC sales. According to Dataquest, most
other vendors had an average year, as shown in Table 1.

Dataquest reports that IBM's manufacturing strength and vast
experience in a wide range of data processing applications helped
increase its merchant presence with leading computer and disk drive
suppliers. The firm indicates this growth is expected to continue as
the company heightens its Blue Logic technology presence in the
communications and consumer sectors.
