Visibroker ORB:

My speculation is that VisiBroker ORB itself will keep on being licensed and will have a good position since it is more than a "basic" ORB, that is: more versatile, more performant, more features than the java's ORB. I would not be surprised that the JDK ORB be somewhat like the provided JDBC-ODBC bridge-driver, i.e. good enough to develop and test, but very limited (esp. performance/scalability) for real life deployment.

CORBA services:

Then, the CORBA services, it appears may not be as widely, liberally licensed to "other" software infrastructure vendors. And why not, since a developer can just buy the ones they need for Borland (Visi). It was important to get the core out in the market, the ORB, but then for the add-on, just go to Borland. The services being standard based, they may even be bought to operate with any ORBs. True, they don't have all the services, but the important naming and transactions are there.

Application Server:

There is growing momentum for Enterprise JavaBeans as the server-side infrastructure, to operate your business objects on the server, and this is likely where Borland is going, in the Application Server space. This is where they "compete" with some licensees of VisiBroker. They will be running against the like of Novera, Weblogic, PowerTier and Oracle. Borland has the advantage to have all the pieces, including a good pure java IDE, the JDBC stuff, the CORBA stuff, the Transaction stuff to create a very complete solution. These things fetch a good amount of $ per seat, much like DB, and when you rearchitect enterprise apps, the new infrastructure is one of the early choice/expense.

If you want to get a better picture, visit: novera.com and read the product page with their 3 tools. BTW, this is not a public co.

IMO, it is very important that Borland show up soon in this space and with a good offering. OTOH, they may join with someone else to get there quick.

All this: just speculations!

Jocelyn
