NEW YORK, April 20 (Reuters) - Oil services giant
Schlumberger Ltd expects higher earnings in 1998 compared with
1997 but the rate of growth will slow from a year ago, a
company spokeswoman said.
She noted that 1997 had been an exceptionally strong year.
Diluted earnings per share rose to $2.52 from $1.70, and some
of Schlumberger's customers had already indicated they would
moderate their spending growth in 1998.
Asked about market rumors that Schlumberger was considering
a bid for rival company Baker Hughes Inc , she replied
that the company never commented on rumors.
