Downside: Corel drawn and quartered
Michael Cowpland has a problem with his reality distortion field: It doesn't work on anyone but him. Corel Corp.'s cocksure CEO assured shareholders at the company's annual meeting on April 15 that the future looked bright, despite an 80 percent drop in the value of their shares since 1995. Come this time next year, he told the assembled not-so-faithful, Corel would be "so successful" that stockholders would cheer. He assured them they would find the much-maligned Canadian graphics software company "sitting pretty" on the top of the, ahm, allegedly burgeoning NC market.

IBM, Intel to partner on Network Computer
..."As you move through an application, you'll be able to download Java Beans [components] as they are needed-you won't have to download everything at once, says Steve Mann, director of development for OpenJ, Corel Corp.'s tool for assembling applications out of Java Beans. "Depending on the way you use a particular application, Bean X may never get downloaded, and that's neat because now you can use less-expensive hardware and not much memory. Java will speed across the wire."
