Yes, exactly what I have in mind.

This is interesting. See my prior post with article on Oracle tools.

I think Rational is siding more with MS and IONA. Persistence Software has an App server called PowerTier that was developped in teaming with IONA and RATL. So, we have IONA & RATL & MS & Persistence

Oracle is coming with a repo and a modeling tool. Rumor has it that Borland is involved in this modeling tool (don't remember url) and we read that BORL wants to licence DCOM. Borland wants to be "neutral". We read that Jbuilder/AppBuilder becoming more important at Oracle.

What will Borland do ? Really, puzzling, but would think they side with the "pure" gang of ORCL, SUNW, IBM wrt to java/corba so that they can push into the enterprise right Now.

Again, only a bunch of speculation.. Awaiting some light on Apr29

WRT Borland and Rational:

It is somewhat stunning there is not more integration between the products of these 2 corp. Both are targetting the same market and have very complimentary products, but at the same time, all the design, lifecycle and testing products from RATL do not seem to have that much integration for Borland tools out of the box. Rational seems to concentrate more on the MS tools: VB, VC nowadays.

Hans,

I spent some time at JavaOne trying to fathom Suns strategy with Corba? Its not easy to comprehend! I did discover that the ORB that's included in Java 1.2 has very limited functionality and does not support many of the standard Corba services. It provides client side Corba connectivity - but from what they said - you will have to buy some additional JavaSoft Corba product if you want to develop server side Corba objects. In addition it seems to only support Java - ie no C++ support was discussed.

I felt that if anything this is going to help Borland - particularly after they make their product announcements next week.

Hans-Erik,

I think your speculation is "spot-on". One area that's very exciting that Borland has a very significant lead on the market is their AppCenter - Application/Component management product. With all the Corba/EJB applications/components being developed its vital that good "application" centric management tools are available. No one at JavaOne had anything close to AppCenter's functionality. It will be a good differentiator for quite some time.
