I get the impression that your opinion of the WSJ and its sister pubs is not the highest but FWIW I've subscribed to SM for several years and have followed their selections and they really have an excellent record with their picks, which tend to be value-oriented.

They pick two of our guys in the interactive edition which is ahead of the distribution of the May print edition (CRLBF & MDCO). Can't hurt.

Vet Centers Up 7%; Named Top 10 Bargain By SmartMoney

NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--Veterinary Centers of America Inc. (VCAI) shares improved 6.8% Monday, likely on the selection of the company as one of the 10 best stocks selling for less than $25 by SmartMoney Interactive, the Internet edition of SmartMoney magazine.

The list was highlighted on CNBC Friday evening.

The list, which will appear in the May issue of the magazine, is composed of smaller stocks that aren't widely followed by institutional investors but positioned for potentially strong growth.
SmartMoney also took into account the industry in which the company operates.

As for Veterinary Centers, which owns and operates veterinary hospitals and clinical laboratories, the magazine said investors get "health-care earnings without Medicaid fears."

Bob Antin, the company's chairman and chief executive, said the stock was likely up on the SmartMoney news and possibly on the solid earnings of Idexx Laboratories Inc. (IDXX), reported Friday. Idexx develops detection, diagnostic and information products and services for applications in animal health.

Veterinary Centers is expected to post its first-quarter earnings at the end of the week. Antin declined to discuss the results, while several analysts said the company is expected to earn about 10 cents a share, with an upside surprise not out of the question.

The stock was trading recently at 17 5/8, up 1 1/8, on Nasdaq volume of 630,300, compared with average daily volume of 184,800. Earlier, the shares reached 18 1/4, a 52-week high, passing the high of 16 7/8 set Oct. 7, 1997.

The other stocks included in SmartMoney's list were: American Oncology Resources Inc. (AORI), Brightpoint Inc. (CELL), Cash America International Inc. (PWN), Catellus Development Corp.(CDX), Core Laboratories N.V. (CRLBF) , Helen Of Troy Corp. (HELE), Input/Output Inc. (IO), Learning Tree International Inc. (LTRE), and Marine Drilling Co. (MDCO) .
