Don: Thanks for the post. <<Optimay specializes in the development of software products and services for Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) cellular phones -- a market that is expected to grow from 65 million subscribers to 300 million by 2002(A).>>

Sorta' makes all those "GSM is History" posts look a little premature, doesn't it? ; ) ...Tim

Lucent Wires Continental Airlines' New Headquarters With High-Speed Cabling Solution

PR Newswire - April 21, 1998 09:00

HOUSTON, April 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Lucent Technologies today announced an
agreement to wire Continental Airline's new headquarters facility in Houston
with Lucent's SYSTIMAX(R) GigaSPEED(TM) Solution, a high-speed cabling system
designed to deliver reliable communications for voice, data and video
applications at speeds up to 1.2 gigabits per second.
"Continental Airlines relies on its communications infrastructure to meet
people's travel needs -- it is the lifeline of our business," said John Gana,
manager of telecommunications at Continental Airlines. "Lucent's GigaSPEED
system gives us a flexible, high-speed communications network that supports
the technologies we use most today and provides a platform for future
communication applications."
Continental's new headquarters will occupy 800,000 sq. ft. in a
state-of-the-art downtown Houston facility that will house the company's
business operations including it's new Systems Operations Center, responsible
for tracking the airline's fleet of jets using one of the most sophisticated
systems in the airline industry.
The installation, expected to be complete by year's end, includes some
three million feet of Lucent's GigaSPEED copper cabling and over 38,000 MGS200
GigaSPEED information outlets. The flexibility of the system provides each
desktop workstation with four separate connections to support voice, video and
data requirements, making moves and changes as easy as plugging into a new
jack.
"We knew that Continental would need secure, reliable data transmission
throughout its entire network, but especially in its Systems Operations
Center," said Peter Karlsson, a general manager at Lucent Technologies. "Our
GigaSPEED solution provides Continental with network speed and transmission
reliability, and protects Continental's investment for years to come."
Lucent Technologies' SYSTIMAX GigaSPEED solution features a traditional
four-pair design that exceeds the Telecommunications Industry
Association/Electronic Industry Association 568A standard and offers unmatched
performance. The SYSTIMAX GigaSPEED patented design helps to prevent signals
from interfering with other cable pairs during transmission, enabling signals
to be carried at a constant level at high frequencies. This means fewer data
transmission errors associated with crosstalk, or interference. The company
has 15 patents pending for its GigaSPEED solution.
Lucent recently extended its product and applications assurance warranty
on SYSTIMAX SCS from 15 to 20 years for a complete certified GigaSPEED system.
With this warranty, end users are assured that current or future applications
that meet specified standards will operate over this system.
Lucent's SYSTIMAX GigaSPEED solution was designed and developed by Bell
Labs, the research and development arm of Lucent Technologies. The GigaSPEED
family of products is designed to support current and future applications up
to 200 MHz, where today's systems cannot operate. It is manufactured at the
company's Omaha Works in Nebraska, and internationally at Lucent's facilities
in Brisbane, Australia and Bray, Ireland.
The SYSTIMAX GigaSPEED solution is available through Lucent's authorized
SYSTIMAX SCS distributors and value added resellers, including Anixter, Inc.
and Network Cabling Services, the distributor and reseller for the Continental
Airlines project.
Continental is the fifth largest airline in the U.S., offering more than
2,000 departures daily to 122 domestic and 70 international destinations.
Operating major hubs in Newark, Houston, Cleveland and Guam, Continental is
strategically positioned for TransContinental travel, and offers extensive
service to Latin America and Europe via its Houston and Newark gateways.
Recently, Continental became the only airline in history to earn the Frequent
Flyer Magazine/J.D. Power and Associates award two years in a row for best
customer satisfaction on long-haul flights.
