Your last paragraph had a great point: If you want future relationships, you don't hold a customer's feet to the fire just because you can in the short run.

At various times in my career, I've been on different sides of the table (purchasing and contracts) in business negotiations, and I know that Purchasing folks have a long memory for those who worked with them and those who didn't. In the long run, the purchasing folks will make sure the business goes to those who have worked well with them in the past.
