Canal - Celeron is a good chip aimed at a cheap market. It will replace the Pentium MMX while offering comparable capabilities but in a Slot 1 configuration.

Shifting more and more product and PCs into the "Slot 1 Space" should not be ignored as a very strategic move by Intel.

Once these customers adopt Celeron , and its forthcoming Big Brother - Mendocino - Slot 1/Intel will again dominate the low end like the rest of the PC market.

Once this occurs, the downward spiraling of CPU prices will abate and Intel will regain their earnings momentum.

Don't forget - Intel will be transitioning their CPUS to a new process - 0.18 micron - within a year and will reduce costs significantly as they convert "older 0.25 micron products" to the 0.18 micron process. When that happens, you will know how well Intel has spent its R & D dollars.
