Investor group aims $350 million at "brave new world"

SAN FRANCISCO (Wired) - Institutional Venture Partners of Menlo Park, one of the early backers of Excite, was set to announce a $350 million fund Monday, focused on what the firm calls "brave new world" investments in electronic commerce, digital television, and biotech.

Institutional Venture Partners defines such investments as "those that create and build new markets and companies within them.

These companies usually have undefined business models but can spearhead markets that have significant impact."

The privately held firm has raised more than $1 billion since its founding in 1974.
