Moonray:

In spite of what the article that I posted to E implied, I think the workstation business for LSI has been gradually declining for years. Though I suspect it is still a substantial part of their business and will be not a good thing to lose I don't think it is by any means a major disaster or even an unexpected loss (or at least that is the way I view things!). For me, LSI's computer related business means 2 very favorable long term trends - fibre channel (especially important) and servers (secondary importance for LSI, perhaps!). (The server business may be partly singed because of the SGI thing - I'm not absolutely sure.)

Here's something from a recent reprort:

LSI has traditionally experienced strong sales from the workstation and server markets with customers including SUNW and SGI. Most recently, this end-market application is representing a smaller portion of sales for LSI as the market shifts to more powerful personal computers and LSI invests in the communications and consumer markets. However, LSI will continue to be a leading ASIC supplier in this market with the new growth area being the high density storage market...

So though the loss may sting, I am not worried. Besides the MIPS spinoff is good for the industry in general as it should lead to wider use and acceptance of the architecture.

(I actually suspect MIPS MPUs are used in Fibre channel implementations - though exactly how I don't have a clue. See everything for LSI "flows" together! All that high R&D must lead to expertise in segments that can then be parlayed into uses in other segments...)
