I can give my opinion of a Tier One company as it relates to computers, having been in computer sales for many years. A Tier One company was judged by the market share it held in its particular area. For instance IBM and Compaq were Tier One companies in computers, while NEC was considered a Tier Two company. NEC is probably much larger than Compaq in market cap, but in terms of market share of computers, they had nowhere near the volume. On the other hand, NEC monitors were Tier One because they were once one of the leading color monitors and commanded a very large market share. I would assume that this translates to any industry.
