Actually, hal, I think most of us non-religious types would prefer the term 'agnostic', as that means 'one who does not know' (of course, the immediate and obvious corollary is that the agnostic is pretty darn sure that nobody else knows, either -g-). 'Atheist' I understand to mean 'one who denies the existence of God' - a denial for which there is imho no more evidence than the assumptions of the existence of 'God' in any particular belief structure's form.

Gotta agree with you here, though - "We know exactly what we are doing..... shouting down pure hate." ...... cheers
