All right. I'll be blunt and on the level.
I don't get it.
I hear you saying there is no middle ground.
What I don't see (or have lost sight of) is the two incompatible concepts or quantities - the sides - this middle ground isn't between.
I think you're using ZONA and an open universe as analogies, but I'm not sure.
Analogies are useful to those who have experience with the real thing. A common, shared experience. Then the analogy resonates.
Like that Star Trek - Next episode where Cap'n Cueball had to negotiate with a species who communicated entirely by analogy. I'm in the Cap'n's boots - I'm gonna have to calibrate my frame of reference. You and I apparently don't have the sort of mutual experience that makes analogy effective. Currently.
So, before I cut bait, I'll ask straight out, even if it makes me look dumb.
Please spell out for me what you mean by middle ground, so that I may judge the matter more wisely.
