RETURN OF STAR WARS?
The Clinton Administration claims it isn't afraid of deploying weapons in space. Pointing out that the president had killed only the military space plane, a kinetic anti-satellite weapon, and the Clementine-2 space probe, White House staffer Robert Bell says the Administration is ready to field an operational laser weapon in space if upcoming tests prove feasibility. The White House has asked for more than $100M to fund a competition in 2002 between two teams building half-scale demonstration chemical lasers, Loring Wirbel reports in EE Times.
Republicans had criticized the White House earlier for not wanting to deploy space weapons for fear of violating treaties such as Salt 1. An operational laser system would be a monster, consisting of from 14 to 24 orbiting laser battle stations.
