MCI Selects Lucent's Highly Advanced TrueWave(R) Fiber in Building New Routes in Arizona and Ohio DALLAS, April 20 /PRNewswire/ -- MCI Communications Corp. (Nasdaq: MCIC - news) announced today it will build two new routes on its high-speed telecommunications network using Lucent Technologies' (NYSE: LU - news) enhanced TrueWave(R) fiber, the most advanced optical fiber available in the world today. MCI will deploy the TrueWave fiber in routes between the cities of Wittmann and Phoenix in Arizona, and in Cleveland, Ohio. The new network links will be used by MCI to carry voice, data and Internet traffic to both long-distance and local customers. This deal marks the first time that MCI has purchased fiber from Lucent. ''MCI operates the most technologically advanced network in the world, so it's no surprise that we're installing the world's most advanced optical fiber,'' said Jack Walters, vice president for networkMCI Services engineering, noting that the MCI network operates at speeds of up to 80 gigabits -- the fastest in the industry. ''These new routes will help MCI to continue meeting our customers' growing demand for highly advanced products and services. We're pleased to be working with Lucent, a leader in fiber optic technology.'' ''Fiber is changing the way the world is communicating,'' said Mike Decelle, vice president with Lucent Technologies. ''With the ever-increasing bandwidth and performance demands on today's data, long-distance and local networks, it is critical for companies like MCI to get the most out of their network capacity. We believe our TrueWave fiber optic cable will provide MCI with increased capacity, efficiency and flexibility in their network for years to come.'' Lucent engineers designed the award-winning TrueWave fiber specifically for long-distance networks that operate in the 1530 to 1565 nanometer (nm) transmission range, and that use wave-division multiplexing with optical amplifiers. Because of its uniform characteristics over a wide range of wavelengths, this enhanced fiber supports present day transmission systems, as well as next-generation systems that will operate at much longer wavelengths. As a result, TrueWave Fiber allows optical signals to travel greater distances at higher bit rates, while maintaining signal quality. And this is the first fiber in the industry to be specially designed to carry optical signals on multiple wavelengths (colors of light), using optical amplification. In testing, Bell Lab researchers have transmitted one trillion bits of information per second over TrueWave fiber. A system operating at this capacity would be able to carry all of the Internet traffic in the world simultaneously over a single stand of hair-thin fiber. Lucent Technologies, headquartered in Murray Hill, N.J., designs, builds and delivers a wide range of public and private networks, communications systems and software, data networking systems, business telephone systems and microelectronic components. Bell Labs is the research and development arm for the company. For more information on Lucent Technologies, visit the company's Web site at lucent.com . MCI, headquartered in Washington, D.C., is a leading provider of local-to-global communication services to business, government and residential users. The company's fast-growing portfolio of advanced data, Internet and IT services now accounts for nearly a quarter of MCI's $19.7 billion in annual revenue. MCI operates one of the world's largest and most advanced digital networks, connecting local markets in the U.S. to hundreds of locations worldwide. MCI has agreed to merge with WorldCom, one of the world's fastest-growing communications companies. The merger, which is expected to be completed in mid-1998, will create MCI WorldCom, a company uniquely positioned in the U.S. local and long distance markets as well as the global data and Internet markets.
