Some people in this thread did overstated the importance of backward compatibility. Nevertheless, backward compatible is an important feature. In real life business practice, migration of new product is a tough issue and product that provides smooth transition option often has an edge. Take a look at hardware and software in your computer and see how many compatibilities in them (Fast-Ethernet, modem, CDR, CD-RW, DVD-ROM II, CPU, Win95, video card, monitor, Jaz, Zip Plus...). A product can still be successful without backward compatible but it just need more effort.
