General Instrument Provides Set-Top Terminals for Historic Launch Of Internet Cable TV Service
GI's Advanced Analog and Digital Set-Top Terminals Provide the Platform That Enables Operators to Offer High-Speed Internet Access
HORSHAM, Pa., April 21 /PRNewswire/ -- General Instrument Corporation (NYSE: GIC - news) announced today that the first U.S. launch of Internet Cable TV service by Charter Communications and WorldGate Communications, is being delivered through a GI CFT-2200 set-top terminal. The WorldGate Internet service is now being offered to Charter Communications customers in St. Louis following a successful six-month trial test.

The CFT-2200, GI's most advanced analog set-top terminal, is a key part of the company's industry-leading analog system. It is the only advanced analog platform to offer expanded tuning for additional analog channels, interactive program guides, virtual channels, CD quality digital audio services and the ability to support emerging interactive applications.

These applications include high-speed Internet access, Near-Video-On-Demand (NVOD), Enhanced Broadcasting, Caller-ID and Visual Voice Mail. As such, the platform provides operators with the most complete set of functionality available today, as well as opportunities to grow revenues by offering consumers new applications that enhance program viewing.

The WorldGate Internet service is designed to work with GI's advanced analog and digital set-top terminals enabling operators to launch the service on either platform. The CFT-2200 is designed to provide resolution comparable to the best that can be viewed on a TV set and the capability to receive Internet information at data rates from four to ten times faster than standard telephone modems (28.8 kbs.). The digital capabilities of GI's DCT-1000 allows real time interactivity and significantly higher data rates, 27 Mbps (using 64 QAM modulation), all delivered with crisp MPEG-2 video and Dolby AC-3 digital audio.

''We are very excited about the opportunity to work with WorldGate and Charter on this first commercial launch of low cost, high performance Internet access over the television,'' said Edward D. Breen, Chairman and CEO of General Instrument. ''Partnerships such as this will provide the framework for millions of homes to receive affordable Internet service.''

The WorldGate service is designed to enable the broadband operator to provide quality Internet access utilizing the set-top terminal and broadband plant. With broadband Internet access, consumers will no longer tie up a telephone line, require additional local phone access charges or have problems with busy signals.

The WorldGate Channel HyperLinking(SM) feature greatly expands and customizes the available programming content and enables subscribers to access more information by linking a program they are watching directly to a related web site. For the operator, the ability to have subscribers access advertisers' web sites can provide a significant new source of revenue.

General Instrument Corporation (NYSE: GIC - news) is the world leader in analog and digital systems that provide video, audio and high-speed Internet/data services over cable and satellite TV networks. GI's cable and satellite TV operations have approximately 7,000 employees and annual sales of approximately $1.8 billion.
