Dell Transitions Its Entire Dell Dimension Desktop PC Line to Intel Pentium II Processors
Company Lowers Prices to Start at $1,499
ROUND ROCK, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 21, 1998--Dell Computer Corporation (NASDAQ:DELL - news), the world's leading direct computer systems company, today announced that beginning in May it will offer only Intel's Pentium II(R) processors on its Dell Dimension(R) desktop PCs worldwide.

Today's announcement signals the removal of Intel's older Pentium processors from Dell's Dimension offerings while other PC makers attempt to transition to newer technology. The Dell Dimension transition to Pentium II processors is already complete in Europe and Japan.

''International Data Corp. predicts that by the fourth quarter, 73 percent of desktop and notebook PCs will be sold with Pentium II,'' said Kevin Rollins, Dell vice chairman. ''Dell is leading this transition because our customers want more technology, not less.''

Available today, Dell Dimension XPS PCs with Pentium II processors for small businesses and consumers start at $1,499, including a 233MHz Intel(R) Pentium II processor, 32MB of SDRAM, 512KB cache, 4.3GB ultra ATA hard drive, 15-inch (13.7 inch v.i.s.) color monitor, 4MB advanced 3D graphics, 32X max variable CD-ROM, Microsoft(R) Office 97 Small Business Edition with Bookshelf and Microsoft Windows(R) 95 with a free Windows 98 upgrade packet, a three-year limited warranty, and lifetime, toll-free, 24-hour hardware service and support with one-year onsite service.

Because Dell custom configures PCs to match the customer's order, the company doesn't have a large inventory of finished systems and can therefore immediately offer customers new technologies at attractive prices. Dell Dimension customers typically lead the computer industry in transitions to new technology, including advanced video and audio solutions, DVD ROM, expansive hard drives, high-speed SDRAM memory and Microsoft Windows 95.

''At the rate that technology advances these days, it's important to know that my PC can handle anything I can throw at it,'' said Jim Williams, an Atlanta-based management consultant and Dell Dimension customer in Atlanta. ''Multimedia applications continue to demand more resources, digital photos are easier to capture and require more space on my hard drive, and we've only just begun to tap the full potential of the Internet. The last thing I want is to be left on the sidelines or forced to upgrade in order to be a part of these new technologies.''
