JVC Professional Products Shows D-VHS VCR With HDTV Recording - -April 13, 1998

JVC Professional Products used the NAB Show in Las Vegas to unveil a prototype D-VHS VCR with an HDTV recording mode.

Although JVC didn't offer marketing plans, it said the HD decks would be priced about $500 higher than base D-VHS recorders. "So, if the base machine is $300 the final price of a D-VHS HD Mode unit comes to something like $800," making them affordable for high-end consumers, a JVC executive said.

The system also can be used by retailers to connect with an HD feed for in-store HDTV demonstrations, particularly during daytime hours, when there initially will be few full HDTV on-air broadcasts.

Scott Watson, JVC Professional Products, marketing development VP, said the development of the system to "extend VHS technology to the recording of HDTV signals" is "in the final stages" and should be completed by midyear.

dot to dot...

Now let's not forget Les & company are using Sun's Sparc chip for the DVx chip. I think it's safe to say that the "100-MHz processor" in the new AVIA decoders is a Sparc.

Do you think Sun wants to do a Settop box?

If they want to do video wouldn't they need an MPEG decoder partner?

They have one: c-cube.com
