But the bubble in Internet
stocks could burst.
"All these stocks work in
waves," Blodget said. "What
goes up fast can easily go
down fast. But the people who
are putting money into K-Tel
aren't looking for numbers,
but they are playing a stock
that is on fire."
Words like "absurd" and
"ridiculous" have been
popping up in comments of
many seasoned Wall Street
watchers, who say Internet
stocks can't justify their
sky-high earnings multiples.
Other less vituperative
analysts say it's just indicative
of a new paradigm in play in
the markets with Internet
stocks.
Even electronic commerce
devotees say K-Tel's rise may
be a bit of a flash in the pan
because the music-selling site
isn't up yet, so it's tough to
project what sales will be.
"This is insanity," said
Melissa Bane, an e-commerce
analyst at Yankee Group, a
hi-tech research firm based in
Boston. "If this is a reflection
of the company going on the
Internet and the company
doesn't even have a site yet,
this is insanity.
