Whiffed by a penny, .05 vs .06 expected mean. Shouldn't kill the stock but won't light a fire under it either. At these prices there's a lot of disappointment already built in. May get a lift from the contract announcements even.

Looks like they came in a bit under consensus ($.05 vs. $.06 estimated).

However, they indicated an improving picture for the rest of the year. The two contracts they announced are also very positive, especially the PageMart contract for NPCS infrastructure. Additionally, PageMart has even chosen to use GEMS' new pager product, which I see as potentially a validation for the foray into this new (for GEMS) market).

So, some negatives and some positives. I think GEMS should trade up mnicely tomorrow. As we know, the stock seems quite undervalued. It's still a profitable company and it seems to be indicating the worst is over. A couple of nice big contracts certainly don't hurt.

The key:

"[W]e expect improved top and bottom lines for the rest of 1998."

Stock will trade up tomorrow--exactly how much depends on conference call tone. Anyone have the number?
