You need to understand how Microsoft does Public Relations. Microsoft creates their own news and then publishes it as a PR piece. For example Microsoft will cut some sweetheart deal to give universities free software (for a while) and when they implement it a Press Release is issued as to how "Educational Institutions are adopting NT at unparalled levels".

For example last year a large Financial Services company announced that they were moving to a Windows NT framework - from trading desk to back office. If you look closer at what happened Compaq and Microsoft sold them on NT's continual progress (or pipe dreams - they displaced IBM AIX) - of course that was before NT 5.0 was delayed and now possibly Merced. The news really was non news anyway - as the mainframes, unix servers and workstations are still in place.

Bottom line Microsoft makes a lot of noise but Sun keeps growing.
