As so often happens, one subject search leads to another and pretty soon I'm in the middle of China wondering how I got there.

KANATA, ONT., January 16, 1996 -- Newbridge Networks Corporation announced today it has been awarded a contract for the second phase expansion for China's National Public Digital Data Network (DDN) backbone. The contract calls for an extension of the network's coverage from 21 to 31 provinces, more than doubling the installed base of Newbridge MainStreet backbone switches.

With network nodes in 31 major provinces serving a population of more than 1.2 billion people, the DDN backbone utilizes the Newbridge 3600 MainStreet Bandwidth Manager, and 3630 MainStreet Primary Rate Multiplexer products to offer data services ranging from 300 bit/s to 2.048 Mbit/s. The network is managed by the Newbridge 4602 MainStreet Intelligent NetworkStation network management system, including custom software developed by CrossKeys Systems Corporation, a Newbridge affiliated company. . . .

Newbridge has installed more than 80 public DDNs in the People's Republic of China since it was awarded the China National Public DDN backbone network in 1993. More than 3,000 Newbridge nodes have been installed in the PRC since the MainStreet product line was first introduced in 1988. In recent months the company has also been awarded contracts to supply Newbridge products for the expansion of DDN networks in the provinces of Shanghai and Hebei plus a new DDN in Hainan province. >>>
