Novell's Third Beta Version Of Netware 5 Available April 27

PROVO, Utah -(Dow Jones)- Novell Inc. said the third beta release of
its NetWare 5 will be available April 27.
NetWare 5 Beta 3 features an enhanced version of Novell Directory
Services and ConsoleOne, a Java-based framework for consolidating and
managing all network management utilities from a single graphical user
interface.
Novell (NOVL) said Netware 5 Beta 3 also includes a Java Virtual
Machine, a five-user license of Oracle8, Netscape FastTrack Server for
NetWare and Netscape Communicator, and Novell Upgrade Wizard.
The company said there are currently more than 122,000 people testing
the second beta version of NetWare 5, which the company expects to
deliver in mid-1998. Analysts project NetWare 5 could bring Novell 10%
to 15% annual revenue growth starting next year.
Novell said customers can register for NetWare 5 Beta 3 on the
company's web site for a fee of $20.
In its heyday, Novell set the pace for software that links computers
in a network, but the company has since seen its dominant position erode
under attack from Microsoft Corp.'s (MSFT) Windows NT.
In response, Novell has switched gears and concentrated on rebuilding
its products around the standard protocol of the Internet. The company
has said it plans to be a "pure" Internet software firm by this summer.
Working in the company's favor is a new management team headed by
former Sun Microsystems Inc. executive Eric Schmidt, who joined Novell a
year ago as chairman and chief executive.
Schmidt, who headed the team that developed that oversaw development
of the Java programing language at Sun, has slashed inventories at
Novell's distributors by halting shipments and speeded the flow of
long-overdue technology to market.
The company's product lineup includes its NDS network user directory,
which runs on Microsoft's Windows NT; BorderManager, network management
software for intranets; GroupWise, groupware that has almost 9 million
users; and ZenWorks, management software for remote network access.
