Sun Changes Organization Structure Creates New Storage and Consumer Divisions PALO ALTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 22, 1998--Sun Microsystems, Inc. (NASDAQ:SUNW - news) today announced that it has made changes to its current business organization. The company will eliminate its individual operating companies and move to a set of divisions focused on products, technologies and services that are under the direction and leadership of Chief Operating Officer Ed Zander. The changes are designed to build on the company's strength in network computing in both enterprise and consumer markets and to further accelerate the company's time-to-market and product development processes. The company also announced the formation of two new divisions focused on the networked storage and consumer/embedded markets. ''The time is right for Sun to position itself for a new era of growth and success,'' said Zander. ''Our focus and strategy have not changed; in fact, they have put us in the position of strength and leadership we enjoy today. These changes will allow Sun to build on that success by responding to and capitalizing on new markets and new opportunities quickly and effectively. Our goal is to align the organization more tightly and streamline internal processes so that we achieve greater operational efficiency and provide a unified face to the customer.'' Reporting directly to Zander, who was named Sun's Chief Operating Officer in January, are seven division presidents and Chief Technology Officer Greg Papadopoulos. Masood Jabbar will head Sun's computer systems division, which includes servers, desktop workstations and network computers. Mel Friedman will lead the microelectronics division, which includes the SPARC(TM) microprocessor, board products and Java(TM) microprocessors. John McFarlane has been named president of the Solaris software division, which includes the Solaris operating environment for SPARC and X86, PC-interoperability and messaging/mail. Dr. Alan Baratz will lead Sun's Java software division and will be responsible for the Java architecture and platform, development tools, desktop software, and the software developer program. Lawrence Hambly heads the customer services division, which focuses on end user service, support, education, training and professional services. Janpieter Scheerder will head the new networked storage division, which includes all storage hardware and software products. And, Mark Tolliver has been named president of the new consumer/embedded markets division which will focus on Java technologies for embedded systems, (including automobiles, phones, set-top/cable) and JavaOS for Consumers(TM) software. The newly formed networked storage division will focus on providing customers with a full suite of integrated hardware and software solutions aimed at the burgeoning mass-storage market, which analysts estimate will hit $36 billion by the year 2001. ''Apart from the significant competitive advantage this particular market brings, enterprise servers and networked storage also present a huge revenue opportunity for Sun,'' said Zander. The new consumer/embedded markets division will focus on software and the core Java technology to be used in network-based consumer applications, such as set-top box, automobiles, and telephones.
