Larry,

I leave my computer on all day long and never had a problem. Not that it can't happen but it is very rare. Not much of a different situation from TV, radio, etc.

Kat, I would be curious to know if the Memory was recently purchased. If a problem is going to occur in a new device, it usually occurs within the first couple of weeks.

...BTW, you weren't visiting any of GRIM's sites when this occurred? That can also cause those memory chips to get overheated and start smokin'.<g>

These types of components don't "catch fire" per se, the worst you'll see is big scorchmarks that only extend to the chip. You don't have to worry about your table or curtains catching fire. The basic computer is far less flammable than anything else that can fail from overheating.
