I know there are many of you who are taken aback by what appears to be REDB jumping on the internet bandwagon in announcing the Amazon.com contract as a way of moving the stock (a technique that has certainly worked for many other companies recently that have announced business relationships with AOL). Is this shameless hype or merely a result of that inevitable corporate tension between engineers and marketing mavens? It is always appropriate to be sceptical. However there has been alot of press recently about how Amazon's break neck growth has not allowed them to take a look at the terabytes of data they have collected on their customers. Naturally it is imperative that Amazon figures out who their customers are and what they want before B&N, Borders, and others take their lead and put them out of business. I do not know whether REDB has been reading the same press, but I think it speaks well of them that they landed this big high-profile account, only their second terabyte account (after AOL). These two clients are two of the fastest growing businesses in the world. Both are regarded as being very well managed. What is the significance of all of this? Do AOL and AMZN buy equally large or larger DBMSs from other vendors? Is it like Mobil announcing they sell gasoline to the company (to paraphrase Briefings today). I leave that to you, my better informed colleagues on this thread, to determine. SC
