jad,

I wouldn't see the statement about switches "from other vendors" as meaning very much. Once your LAN or SAN is set up with the appropriate adapter cards is is essentially "plug and play".

FYI, I was at Comdex the other day and I ran into a know-it-all engineer/ceo that had a lot of interesting things to say about the fibre channel switch market. Just thought I'd get the ANCR board's comments concerning his thoughts:

1) McData will end up getting most of the switch business because of their affiliation with EMC - EMC already has plenty of potential OEM vendors as existing satisfied clients in the storage industry. (note: he was not affiliated with McData or EMC in any way - just his professional opinion).

2) Since McData (EMC) will be one of the larger players, that leaves EMC's competitor IBM. IBM will probably partner with, or most likely buy out a company like Ancor or Brocade. Ancor probably has the edge because they have a top notch engineering crew and of course, IBM holds shares in Ancor.

He said this should happen somewhere between now and end of the 1999 year.

He also said that if Ancor or Brocade do not get a following soon, their future does not look good.
