AVANT! CORP (AVNT) 25 7/8 +7. Both investors and Wall Street are speculating that an injunction
against the company's new Aquarius product is less-likely after a judge met with the lawyers of Avant! and
Cadence yesterday and reportedly set higher standards for injunction of AVNT's latest line of
computer-aided design software. Cadence sued Avant! three years ago alleging that the company had
stolen trade secrets. Then, last year, the the Santa Clara County district attorney's office entered the mix
and directly charged the company's CEO with the very same crime. In September of 1997, a federal court
reversed a lower court ruling that allowed Avant! to continue to sell its ArcCell product software which
Cadence Design Systems claimed infringed on its copyrights. While Avant! no longer sold the ArcCell
product, investors were concerned that the appeals decision could have repercussions on its Aquarius
software product which the judge recommended the lower court also prevent Avant! from selling. Today,
AVNT shares were boosted after a Wessels Arnold said a preliminary injunction against the
Aquarius product line appears less likely. While "less likely" is a positive, the fight between Cadence
and Avant! is far from over. Even if the product is not enjoined immediately, there is a possibility that the
action could occur at a later date.

(perhaps, this news caused decline in the CDN stock price?)
