KCTU Threatens a General Strike

The Chairman of the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU) Lee Kap-yong said Wednesday that the president's proposal of solving problems through the joining of the tripartite commission of labor - management - government is naive in consideration of the current conditions, and if the union's demands are not met, it will not join the second term of meetings and begin a general strike. In a news conference following his meeting with the president, Lee said that workers were first to share the pain in exchange for their participation in the first term of commission meetings, and as long as agreements including conglomerate reform are not respected, he will not accept the government's proposals.

Lee said that if his union's four demands of 1) suspending the lay system and maintaining the current employment level, 2) enacting measures to stop illegal labor practices, 3) suspending unilateral restructuring in the public sector, and 4) selling Kia Motors to a third party are not met the KCTU will start a strike at the end of May of the beginning of June.

President Kim appealed to Lee and 20 other labor leaders Wednesday morning in the Presidential Office to participate in the second term of the commission's meetings.
