BIOS barriers
Microsoft Corp.'s year-2000 information is located at
www.microsoft.com/cio/articles/year2000faq.htm. It claims there are no
problems with DOS or Windows but notes that some PC users may
encounter BIOS problems because of "low-level BIOS software provided
by other vendors." In most cases, the document states, users can simply reset
the clock; but there is a small amount of BIOS software, mostly located in
Asia, that doesn't allow such a reset.

Tempted to do your own testing by setting your clock to the year 2000? In a
warn-ing that applies to any platform, Microsoft notes, "If you have any
software that has time limits, this test could trigger the software to expire and
be permanently disabled. There could be other problems, like dated security
certificates becoming invalid, your calendar ignoring or removing important
applications, or e-mail messages being filed incorrectly."
