But he said in an interview that earnings, while up strongly over year-earlier levels, would be down slightly from the 50 cents per share reported for the third quarter due to higher sales and marketing expenses.

Maffei said earnings in each of the first two quarters of fiscal 1999, which begins July 1, would be similar with the fourth-quarter figure, although he said there could be a modest ''seasonal uptick'' in revenues in the December quarter.

He said an expected modest increase in sales due to the forthcoming release of the Windows 98 operating system upgrade would be offset by increased marketing and sales expenses.

Among other active issues, Microsoft Corp. (MSFT - news) eased to 98-1/8 from a 98-7/8 close after the company reported third-quarter earnings per share of $0.50 which beat the First Call estimate at $0.48. The shares traded at 99 earlier in the after-hours session.
