Bob,

Naw, Hal 2000 was far too emotional for my tastes:)

The point is fighting bigotry is not throwing stones at someone. Do you know this week is Yom HaShoa--Holocaust Remembrance Day. It is one of the most tragic days in Judaism, as you most certainly can imagine. Very appropriate to combat racism and bigotry this week, as all weeks. Naturally, Emile would choose this of all weeks to inflict the most pain he can on those of us who mourn the dead.

Hal

Bob, Hal,
the 40 million number is probably right for the number of dead in Europe during WWII. I study both European history and Military history as a sub discipline and I have seen numerous reputable estimates in that range. It is believed over 20 million Russians died during the war, many at the hands of Stalin's death squads (Hitler did not have this field of endeavor to himself unfortunately). So you are right that a large number came from the Soviet Union but you are wrong in that they were not Christians. The government may have been atheistic but the people who were doing the dying remained Christian.
Also the number I have seen for people murdered in the camps has ranged as high as 14 million. Millions of slavs, gypsys, homosexuals, political dissidents, mentally and physically handicapped people were also murdered. I mention this not to support the spirit of Emile's comment or lessen the horror of what was done to the Jews, clearly the Jews were the target of a vile campaign, but it is true that millions of Christians were also murdered by the Nazis. I have family history to prove this as I have a number of relatives who died in the camps.
