Peter: Netscapes LDAP is 50 times faster then Novell's NDS

On November 5, 1997, a benchmark study from an independent test lab confirmed that Netscape Directory Server 1.03 handles directory searches more than 48 times as fast as Novell Directory Services. The study also discovered that Novell Directory Services could not handle more than 7 simultaneous clients. Netscape Directory Server handled at least 30 simultaneous clients (the largest number tested in the study); customers have been successful with even more simultaneous clients.

Because Netcape Directory Server is a native implementation LDAP server that does not require a separate gateway, it also has one less possible point of failure than the Novell solution. Customers who deploy Novell Directory Services as an LDAP server must deal with two separate processes, the Novell directory itself and a separate LDAP gateway. This LDAP gateway contributes to Novell Directory Services' poor performance and creates another possible point of failure that administrators must manage.

But that's not really my point.... It will take another post...

Respectfully

Jim

>>I'd be willing to hazard a guess that a lot of those HP customers will have an NDS directory running in the background, with LDAP being used to access it. It's about the only Directory Service that works properly today...>>

Peter:

I think many of the geeks out there know full well the REAL game is only just getting started. Network Services is where its all at and the Directory - not the GUI, not the platform - is THE KEY to the kingdom. I am not the one to comment with Jim tit for tat on the virtuous plans Microsoft has in store for us with Active Directory. The fact is, LDAP is there now and NDS is the only feature-rich fully functional directory that can make sense out of this maze of confusion that's fast descending upon corporate network enterprise IS-dom.

With Directory Services such at NDS running well NOW, we have, for the first time, a module - a technology - that's very good at counting and tracking all the bodies buried everywhere in the Global Network. Categorizing bodies is what makes these "keys" valuable and I am a firm believer in the fact that companies are counting those bodies NOW - not in 1 1/2 year or more when AD comes out.

Give me a universal user ID - allow me to log onto the Internet anywhere - and lets begin the process of tracking who, what, when, where - for entry, access, security, etc. NDS is the perfect vehicle for this. ISP's everywhere know this NOW. I think Schmidt is brilliant. No hype. He's sees the vision and is executing the plan.

What does Gates fear most? That the body counters will have the keys before he gets a chances to warehouse the data in AD. My company plans on counting those bodies in the financial services industry. We are very excited about the potential which Novell and NDS bring to the table. The "speed thing" will be worked out.

I'm still sitting and waiting for Novell to retrace back into the mid to lower $9's before I buy more.

Good luck to all.
