NEWTON, Iowa, April 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Maytag Corporation's (NYSE:MYG ) first quarter sales and earnings set all-time highs for any quarter in the company's history.
Sales in the period rose to $1.040 billion, up 31 percent from sales of $792.5 million in the first quarter of 1997.

Operating income increased 77 percent to $135.1 million and represented an operating margin of 13 percent. Last year's first quarter operating income was $76.5 million and the operating margin was 9.7 percent.
