Going forward, Maffei said Microsoft faces challenges in Asia and
a Year 2000 problem as corporations postpone purchases to fix
legacy systems. The financial chief said he wasn't sure what the
impact will be to Microsoft's bottom line.

Microsoft also said it will have higher marketing expenses in the
fourth quarter related to the launch of Windows 98, coupled with
flat research and development spending. Marketing expenses were
$829 million in the third quarter, said Maffei.

"Fourth quarter revenue will be about flat with the current quarter,"
said Maffei. "Higher marketing spending may cause EPS [earnings
per share] to be down a few pennies."
