Bandicoot is an English word? What does it mean?

I'm fascinated by the everyday words such as:
Bandanna
Bungalow
Catamaran
Bazaar
Dinghy
Dungarees
Khaki
Mogul
Paisley
Polo
Pyjamas
Sherbet
Verandah

These are words so thoroughly incorporated that most Americans don't even know they originated in South Asia and would be shocked, SHOCKED to find out.

Did all come to the U.S. via England? Are any used in America but not in England?

Etymology is fun history.
