Mike,
"""NYSE is mostly open outcry as opposed to NASDAQ which is 100% electronic."""

NYSE is becoming more electronic with many trades by-passing the exchange. The electronic brokerages like E-Trade match up customer orders in their system without ever going to the exchange. Typical fill times on E-Trade for NYSE stocks is less than a minute, hardly enough time for them to call the floor broker and negotiate a trade. Many market orders are handled this way. If you have a large limit order it goes in the specialists book to be worked. E-Trade is planning a 24 hour trading system to start in about a year when they will be big enough to make markets is just about all stocks. I had four NYSE trades on E-Trade today and they were all filled in less than a minute.
