To all:

Don't know how/if the following relates-but took this off the International news.

Wednesday April 22, 8:06 pm Eastern Time

NEC to mass produce next-generation System LSI

TOKYO, April 23 (Reuters) - NEC Corp (6701.T) said on Thursday that it would start mass
production of next-generation System LSI chips, using 0.15 micron to 0.18 micron technology, in
early 1999.

NEC said it would start sample shipments of the LSI chips in October, prior to the start of
mass-production next year.

NEC initially plans to produce the chips at two of its plants in Japan, the spokesman said.

Initial output is expected to be about two million units per month, rising to more than 10 million units
a month after the year 2000, he said.

System LSI chips are used for various home electronic appliances and for information equipment.

System LSI chips currently used in these products are made using 0.25 micron technology.

The NEC spokesman declined to say how much the company was investing at the two factories to
mass produce the chips.

He said NEC's investment in 0.15 micron to 0.18 micron technology over the next few years would
be about 300 billion yen, but added that this covers application of the technology to memory chips
and investment in other factories as well.
