<Hydrocarbons are very much more rare...
maybe we shouldnt just burn them up.>

a little waxing philosophic...
Maybe the planet is on the verge of the
next great ice age, and the gradual
depletion of co2 over the last billion
years has sealed the planet's fate in
ice. On a geological time scale, never
before has so much land been located
near the poles (that's bad) and with each
glacial advance it becomes more likely that
ice sheets simply continue to progress
toward the equator. Mining hydrocarbons
and injecting them back in the system
might be just the thing which saves
the planet.

On the other hand, Earth seemed to be
doing fine before we arrived on the
scene. When I think about how much
change five billion consumers can do
to the environment I cringe. Just wait
til the Chinese start building freeways
and buying Explorers, it'll happen in
our lifetime, then watch the weather
go wild...
