Millennnium Bug might affect pacemakers

(this is from the Knight Tribune News Service---I will only note highlights of the article since I don't have a scanner --- it appeared in the Florida Times Union, front page april 22nd)

Thousands of computers that monitor pacemakers could be disrupted by the year 2000 computer date change, meaning life saving data crucial to treatment and diagnosis could be riddled with errors when the millennium comes.

"It could be a huge problem for us" said Jennifer Darr, a cardiac nursing manager for the Orlando Regional Medical Center."We couldn't program the pacemaker properly, and we couldn't look at historical data to find out exactly what has happened to the patient".
Minneapolis based Medtronic Inc., the nations largest manufacturer and also a builder of the related computers, said it has been dealing with the problem.
"We have replaced and are replacing all the desktop computers that are used by the doctors" said Medtronic spokesman Dick Reid.

Health care facilities have launched extensive efforts to check the pacemaker-related computers as well as the other mission critical equipment such as vital sign monitors, magnetic resonance imagers, and intrvenous infusion pumps.

The Food and Drug Administration has warned manufacturers that year 2000 compliance is included in Federal laws requiring safe health care equipment, Ackerman said.
