The Media Metrix data only measure market share.

They do not take into account the recruitment of new people with new computers joining onto the internet. They install PC Meter software onto people's computers which are already connected to the internet. Here is an explanation from the Media Metrix press release.

"The PC Meter software, which is installed on computers in thousands of households and businesses, captures actual real-time web and
online usage data. The PC Meter records detailed demographic information and "follows" PC users click by click, page by
page, tracking and measuring new media and digital usage patterns in the home and at work. It is more reliable and accurate
than recall surveys."

To see the overall growth (market share multiplied by market size) you would have to look at the Relevant Knowledge data. But RK's data includes assumptions and estimates, such as an artibrary guess that overall internet traffic increased 40% around early '98. RK's data estimated that the number of monthly visits to the AMZN website increased almost 3-fold, from 1.7 million to 4.6 million between November '97 and March '98.
