Gary, (and Hitesh too), While everyone is quick to jump on "good 'ol" Cisco and the failure at AT&T...and everyone is quick to place blame....as happened on this thread from the start - even before we really know what happened. Here's what we're hearing now. Remember, AT&T and Cisco have been working together over the past few days to find the true ROOT CAUSE of the failure. So, with that in mind here is that latest:It was reported this morning on CNN (around 6:45 AM) that the the AT&T problem was caused by "human error". NOTE however that according a post I just read on the Cisco thread that apparently the web site still points to Cisco equipment.... so I guess we're all still searching. The point is however that although Cisco is far from perfect, and they will see problems with thier equipment in the future...so too will every other company on the planet. That's what customer service organizations (last I checked ASND, BAY, COMS, NT, LU, etc. etc all had service organizations) are for and this particular area is one that Cisco excels in. So Gary, with regard to the street.com's opinion It may not be the best in reliability and performance but what the heck who cares ? and the one from Kevin Petrie Wednesday confirmed that a Cisco switch played a part in a widespread network outage last week. were not well thought out articles. As I said, the ROOT CAUSE was still being investigated AND, to take the position that only Cisco has equipment failures is just plain wrong (as Clinton would say). The one area in these articles that does hold water is the street.com's position about StrataCom technology. They have not delivered anything new for ages and indeed are losing the technology battle. It'll be interesting to see if and when Cisco corrects this issue. Currently it appears that ASND can take any ATM/FT backbone network they want as Cisco has little response. But here's an interesting thought. I think if we see a slow down in backbone announcements/deals this will be a leading indicator to a Cisco backbone product announcment. So, if it gets quiet.....well, there's always quiet before the storm. And come to think of it, it has been a little more quiet than usual lately....don't you think? OG
